When we work together in shared purpose, we can see and feel the difference in our community–and in ourselves.

Volunteering is good for mental, physical, and emotional health. In May 2023, the Surgeon General of the United States released a study and advisory on the epidemic of social isolation in America. MusiCares also notes higher-than-average levels of stress and anxiety in the music community in our annual Wellness in Music Survey.

Fortunately, we have the tools to reverse this epidemic of loneliness. MusiCares founded this Day of Service for the music community because volunteerism is one of the best ways we can take care of communities while receiving one’s own benefits and healing. Extensive evidence demonstrates that volunteering reduces depression and improves self-esteem. The Surgeon General notes that volunteering can create a virtuous circle that helps us connect. The more we serve others, the more connected we feel; the more connected we feel, the more we serve.
